![]() Crime Stoppers BBQ slated for July 17 The Pettis County Crime Stoppers Organization will hold a Barbecue Chicken Dinner fund-raiser on Thursday, July 17, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Liberty Park Shelter #1 by the Optimist train. The meal will include barbecue chicken prepared by Don Weaver and crew, pasta salad, baked beans, cake or cookies and drink. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors age 55 and over, and $4 for children 4 through 12. Children three and under may eat for free. Tickets are available at the dinner. Pettis County Crime Stoppers, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization funded solely by private contributions and community based fund rasiers such as this event. The following defendants appeared before Judge Robert L. Koffman on his July 21 Law Day docket:Anderson, Amanda, age 22, Sedalia, was ordered to serve a 4 year prison term when her probation was revoked. She was placed on probation for possession of a controlled substance in March of 2006. Her probation was revoked because she committed the offenses of property damage in the second degree and assault in the third degree while on probation. Bearce, Eldon, age 33, Osceola, was sentenced to 4 years in prison on a felony DWI charge. He also received 120-day county jail sentences on charges of driving while revoked, leaving the scene of an accident and endangering the welfare of a child in the second degree. He was arrested Dec. 3 by Sedalia Police Officers Joshua Howell and Mike DeHaven after he struck a parked car near Fifth and Marvin and then left the scene of the accident. His two children, ages 7 and 9, were passengers in the vehicle at the time of the collision, and he was intoxicated at the time. The DWI charge was a felony because the defendant has two prior alcohol-related traffic convictions. The judge retained jurisdiction to consider probation if the defendant successfully completes the Institutional Treatment Program while in prison. Caserta, Jeremy, age 19, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident, admitting he left the scene of an accident at Sixth and Moniteau on March 27. After first paying restitution to the victim, the defendant was sentenced to serve 30 days in jail. Fetters, Douglas, age 48, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance. Sedalia Police Commander David Woolery and Officer David Smith found the defendant in possession of 8 oxycodone pills on May 24 while conducting an investigation into a shoplifting incident. The defendant was sentenced to serve 180 days in jail. Self, Joel, age 31, Marshall, was placed on probation for five years on a charge of criminal non-support of a minor child. He was ordered to pay his basic child support obligation plus an additional amount toward the arrearage as a condition of his probation. Smasal, Anthony, age 43, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to stealing by deceit, admitting he concealed income from wages in order to collect unemployment benefits between March of 2006 and January of 2007. He repaid all benefits he received. Execution of a 120-day county jail sentence was suspended and the defendant was placed on probation for two years. Spears, Jackie, age 38, Galena, Kansas, pleaded guilty to tampering in the second degree. On August 4, the defendant drove a 1999 Ford Taurus to Kansas after being given permission to use it only for a local errand. Execution of a 180-day jail sentence was suspended and she was placed on probation for two years. Conditions of probation include 10 days in jail as shock detention and restitution. Staten, Walter J., age 45, Sedalia, was sentenced to three years in prison for assault in the second degree. The charge arose from a January 1 incident during which he struck his brother in the head with a handgun. Torres, Jimmy, age 48, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to two counts of driving while revoked. He was arrested by Pettis County Sheriff's Dep. Jim Stetzenbach on Feb. 13 and by Sedalia Police Officer Daniel Benner on March 6. The offenses were felonies because the defendant has 4 prior convictions. The case was continued for sentencing. Wilson, Michael, age 17, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to tampering in the first degree, admitting that on March 5 he operated a 1988 GMC Sierra without the owner's permission. Execution of a four-year sentence was suspended and the defendant was placed on probation for 5 years. He also pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor stealing charge, admitting that on Nov. 23 he stole a paintgun from Scuba Down Under. He was sentenced to serve 30 days in jail on this charge. The defendant was prosecuted as an adult because the Juvenile Court in Jackson County, Missouri released him to adult court jurisdiction (³certified² him to stand trial as an adult) in an unrelated case in October of 2007. Workcuff, Gaylen, age 42, Marshall, was sentenced to two years in prison on a stealing charge. She was arrested Dec. 17 when she and Latasha Mays were caught stealing clothes from J. C. Penney. The offense was a felony because the defendant has two prior stealing convictions within the past 10 years. Codefendant Mays is currently serving a two-year sentence after a guilty plea in April. --Submitted by Pettis County Prosecuting Attorney Jeff Mittelhauser The following cases were taken up by Circuit Judge Robert L. Koffman on June 25: Booze, Tamara, age 22, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to driving while revoked. She was stopped for a traffic violation April 14 by Sedalia Police Officer Mike DeHaven, who learned that her driver's license was revoked. The defendant was sentenced to serve 160 days in jail. The offense was a felony because the defendant has four prior convictions for driving while revoked. Gonzales, Leonel Carrasco, age 22, Sedalia, was sentenced to four years in prison on two counts of forgery and 180 days in jail on an identity theft charge. Sedalia Police Officer Travis Lorenz arrested the defendant on an outstanding warrant February 21 and found in his possession an identification card in the name "Alejandro Sanpayo." After further investigation by officers, the defendant admitted he had used that name when he signed a bond form on Dec. 15 and then a guilty plea petition on a charge of no operator's license charge on Feb. 6. At the contested sentencing hearing Wednesday, the State recommended the prison term and the defendant requested a jail sentence. Klein, Timothy, age 48, Sedalia, was sentenced to four years in prison for possession of a controlled substance. Pettis County Sheriff's Det. Mark Morgan stopped the defendant for a traffic violation Dec. 19 after he saw the defendant leave a house suspected of drug activity. After the defendant threw a small object out the window, Det. Morgan found a baggie with a half gram of methamphetamine on the ground near the vehicle and a syringe with a small amount of the drug in the vehicle. The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge June 16. Lipper, Christopher, age 20, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to property damage in the second degree, admitting that on May 29 he acted together with Dave Dotson to damage Brandon Kelch's Mercury Sable automobile at a home on South Grand. Execution of a 180-day jail sentence was suspended and the defendant was placed on supervised probation for two years. On probation, the defendant will be required to serve 30 days in jail as shock detention and pay restitution to the victim. --Submitted by Pettis County Prosecuting Attorney Jeff Mittelhauser The following cases were heard by Judge Robert L. Koffman during his June 16, 2008 Law Day docket: Barnett, Jamie, age 35, Sedalia, was placed on probation for 5 years on a charge of criminal non-support of a minor child. He pleaded guilty to the offense in February, and he received probation because he paid his current child support plus an additional amount toward the arrearage in the intervening months. A condition of his probation is that he continue to make the payments. Cantrell, Alan, age 20, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance. The defendant was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by Sedalia Police Officer Andrew Silvey April 3 after receiving a complaint that the vehicle smelled of marijuana. The officer found a little over 40 grams of marijuana which the defendant admitted was his. He was sentenced to serve 180 days in jail. Carter, Lawrence Christopher, age 37, Kansas City, was placed on probation for five years on a charge of criminal non-support of a minor child. He pleaded guilty to the offense in January and received probation because he paid his current child support plus an additional amount toward the arrearage in the intervening months. A condition of his probation is that he continue paying child support. Caviness, Robert, age 47, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to DWI and driving while revoked, both of which were felonies due to his prior convictions. He was arrested by Sedalia Police Sgt. Ron Miller April 27 after a single vehicle accident at 24th and New York. The defendant was sentenced to 7 years in prison. Claxton, Dominic, age 26, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to possession of an imitation controlled substance with intent to deliver, admitting that on December 4 he possessed an off-white chunky powder which he represented to be crack cocaine. Sedalia Police Detectives Sean Hiatt and Sean Hiatt were conducting an investigation on that date using a confidential informant who attempted to buy cocaine from the defendant. After initially agreeing to sell the substance, the defendant took the money from the informant and then fled on foot after seeing officers parked nearby. He was sentenced to serve 2 years in prison. Davis, Timothy, age 31, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to property damage in the first degree and tampering in connection with a theft from a motor vehicle on February 6, 2006. On that date, Karen Vollmer's 1999 Chevy Prism was broken into while it was parked in a lot on West Broadway. Sedalia Police Det. Jill Green found and collected a small amount of blood in the vehicle. After the defendant was sent to the Department of Corrections on another charge last year, a positive "hit" on the Missouri Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) confirmed that the blood in the vehicle came from the defendant. He was sentenced to two years in prison. Demshick, Shannon, age 37, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance and unlawful transactions with a child. Members of the Sedalia Police Department's Drug Enforcement Unit served a search warrant at her home at 1108 S. Osage September 20 and found methamphetamine residue and a small amount of marijuana. The defendant's minor children resided in the home, leading to the unlawful transactions charge. The Court ordered a sentencing assessment report and scheduled sentencing for Aug. 1. George, Michael, age 24, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to stealing and resisting arrest in connection with a Feb. 27 incident during which he struck a juvenile and then stole his ball cap. On March 13 when Sedalia Police Det. Martin Holdeman attempted to arrest the defendant for the offense, he fled from officers. The defendant was sentenced to four years in prison. Gomez, Marco, age 30, Mora, pleaded guilty to driving while revoked. He was arrested by Missouri State Highway Patrolman Mark DeGraffenreid September 15 at the scene of an accident on 32nd Street Road. In pleading guilty, the defendant admitted he was driving the motor vehicle when his license was revoked. The offense was a felony due to the defendant's prior convictions for DWI. He was sentenced to 120 days in jail. Iliff, Thomas, age 56, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to assault in the third degree, admitting he recklessly injured a family member February 25 when he threw a brick through a window at his home during an argument. Execution of a 90 day sentence was suspended and the defendant was placed on probation for two years. Ingram, James V., age 27, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to assault of a law enforcement officer in the second degree and domestic assault in the second degree. The first offense occurred February 3 when the defendant attempted to injure Sedalia Police Officer Travis Lorenz by biting him as officers were arresting the defendant for trespassing. The second offense arose from a May 8 incident during which he struck a family member while arguing with her. He was sentenced to serve two consecutive 45 day county jail sentences. Klein, Timothy, age 48, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance. Pettis County Sheriff's Det. Mark Morgan stopped the defendant for a traffic violation December 19 after he saw the defendant leave a house suspected of drug activity. After the defendant threw a small object out the window, Det. Morgan found a baggie with a half gram of methamphetamine on the ground near the vehicle and a syringe with a small amount of the drug in the vehicle. The State recommended a 4 year sentence and the case was continued to June 25 for sentencing. Knoeferl, Shauna, age 24, Windsor, pleaded guilty to assault in the second degree. The charges arose from a November 19 single vehicle accident at the South Flat Creek bridge on Highway 52. An investigation by Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Nathan Ahern revealed that the defendant was intoxicated at the time of the accident. Her two children were passengers and sustained minor injuries. Execution of a 5 year sentence was suspended and the defendant was placed on probation for 5 years with a requirement that she serve 60 days in jail as shock detention. Pugh, Christopher, age 22, Jefferson City, pleaded guilty to stealing, an offense which occurred at Walmart January 13. Store employees attempted to stop the defendant as he left the store without paying for a television. When arrested later in the day by Sedalia Police Officer Matt Sprinkles, the defendant admitted he tried to steal the TV after Richard Hollandsworth, who was also arrested and charged with the offense, offered him $100 to do so. The offense was a felony because the defendant has two prior stealing convictions in the past 10 years. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison. Charges remain pending against Hollandsworth. Staten, Anthony, age 39, Sedalia, pleaded guilty to stealing involving the theft of Alvina Seabury's Play Station 3 and video games on Feb. 6. When questioned about the crime by Sedalia Police Det. Ron Parrish, the defendant admitted he stole the property. The offense was a felony because the defendant has two prior stealing convictions within the past ten years. A sentencing assessment report was ordered and the case was continued to Aug. 1 for sentencing. Thornburg, Kevin, age 24, Green Ridge, pleaded guilty to resisting arrest. He was arrested April 23 by Missouri State Highway Patrolman Mark DeGraffenreid. When the trooper tried to stop the defendant for speeding on Highway 52, the defendant ran from the officer at speeds approaching 100 m.p.h., wrecking his vehicle at the intersection of Highway 52 and Route B. The offense was a felony because the defendant's conduct subjected others to substantial risk of serious injury. He was sentenced to serve two years in prison. West, John, age 37, Knob Noster, was placed on probation for five years on a charge of criminal non-support of a minor child. He pleaded guilty to the offense in January and received probation because he paid his current child support plus an additional amount toward the arrearage in the intervening months. A condition of his probation is that he continue to pay child support. Whitlow, Joseph, age 32, Sedalia, was sentenced to 5 years in prison on a charge of possession of a controlled substance. He was arrested October 1 by Sedalia Police Sgt. Bill Broaddus, who found a small amount of methamphetamine in the defendant's pocket after his arrest on a misdemeanor assault charge. The defendant pleaded guilty May 16. Under the terms of the original plea agreement, he was to have received a 4 year sentence. However, the defendant was arrested for driving while revoked June 6, leading to the increased sentence. Workcuff, Gaylen, age 42, Marshall, pleaded guilty to stealing, admitting that on December 17 she acted together with Latasha Mays to steal clothing from J. C. Penney. The offense was a felony because the defendant has two prior stealing convictions within the past 10 years. The State recommended a two year prison term and the case was continued for sentencing.
