Sedalia Weekly Observer staff had a chance to sit down and speak with Missouri State Fair Marketing Director Tammie Nichols this Aug. 12 for a brief update on the 2014 Missouri State Fair.
Nichols was asked how attendance numbers have been this year.
“We don’t have any hard numbers. We won’t know that until the end of the fair,” Nichols said.
She added, “We are tracking really close to where we were last year. Our opening Saturday last year was a record opening so we are up against some big numbers. We had a really strong Saturday this year.”
The temperature for the fair this year has been mild and Nichols was asked if weather has played its part this year.
“The temperatures are great. We couldn’t ask for more beautiful temperatures. We did have some rain. We needed the rain.
“We had to cancel our first Thursday night rodeo. It was just too wet. We had to reschedule it at 12:30 pm on Saturday,” Nichols said.
She added, “We also had to cancel our Sunday qualifying tractor pull. We did not reschedule. It has been an excellent fair. The weather impacts everything at an outdoor fair like this and we have been enjoying a good fair.”
Nichols spoke briefly about numbers at the Pepsi Grandstand concerts events thus far.
“We had a great walk-up for Sara Evans. We had a little over 5,800 people. Florida-Georgia Line has sold out. We ended up having a good crowd for Joan Jett. She can still put on a great concert,” Nichols said.
The 2014 Missouri State Fair, with the theme, “Harvest the Fun,” ran August 7-17.
