Even without Missouri Governor Jay Nixon, the 62nd annual Governor’s Ham Breakfast was a success, with hundreds attending the Thursday morning event at the Director’s Tent on the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia. Gov. Nixon canceled his planned appearance due to the ongoing volatile situation in Ferguson, according to emcee Jim Mathewson.
U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill was also absent from the event. She was in Ferguson today talking directly with constituents and calling for de-militarization of the area. McCaskill is also scheduled to speak directly today with U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.
Also absent from the breakfast was Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder.
The Breakfast included an auction of the Grand Champion Ham, Reserve Grand Champion Ham, Grand Champion Slab of Bacon and a limited edition commemorative belt buckle. Proceeds from the Breakfast and auction will be used to perpetuate projects at the Missouri State Fair, including scholarships for youth involved in agriculture.
Ashlyn Richardson of Lincoln was recognized with the 2014 Women in Agriculture Award, a rising star award presented by Monsanto.
Entertaining the crowd was the Martin Family, a bluegrass band from Jeff City.
