Sedalia200The Sedalia School District 200 Board of Education on July 14 approved a sick leave incentive program that will pay staff members for unused sick days; the goal of the program is to save expenses on substitute teachers, which are in increasingly shorter supply.

Substitute teachers are paid $72.20 per day, while support staff subs are paid $57.37 per day. Under the incentive program, teachers will be paid $50 for each unused sick day; support staff will get $35 per unused sick day. Aside from cost savings, Assistant Superintendent Nancy Scott noted that the pool of qualified subs is shrinking, making it more difficult to cover when a staff member is absent. Also, staff members will be able to roll unused days into their sick leave balance, but they will only be reimbursed for the unused days from that specific calendar year.

In addition, the board:

-Approved the HVAC bid of $145,319 from Home Heating & Cooling for the high school infill area.

-Retained Ricoh for contracted print services.

-Set the tax rate hearing for 6:15 p.m. Aug. 11, just before the board meeting.

-Approved former music teacher Bob Cummings as the next inductee into the Smith-Cotton Activities Hall of Fame. Cummings taught in Sedalia schools for 28 years, retiring in 1980. An Air Force veteran, he founded S-C’s first stage band and performed with the Sedalia and Marshall symphonies. --Submitted by Sedalia School District 200.
