JohnsonFormer Smith-Cotton High School football coach Mark Johnson and his family have launched an annual scholarship for an exceptional student athlete.

The Mark Johnson Academic Achievement Scholarship will award $500 to a S-C football player who is a full-time starter his senior year. Other eligibility requirements are:

–Must have played four years of football for Smith-Cotton High School

–Must have a 3.7 grade-point average or higher on a 4.0 scale at the end of his junior year

–Must never have been suspended for using illegal drugs, alcohol or tobacco

Johnson said there will be no exceptions made – if there are no qualified players in any season, the scholarship will not be awarded that year.

The recipient will have his name engraved on a plaque displayed in the S-C gymnasium. The scholarship will be funded by the Johnson family for 30 years, through 2043.JohnsonSchol.Simoncic2

The scholarship was awarded for the first time at the end of the 2013 season, when Johnson retired from coaching. The winner was senior Cole Simoncic, an Academic All-State honoree.
