War dead honored in Memorial Day ceremony at Crown Hill

CrownHill-36A Memorial Day Ceremony at Crown Hill Cemetery, sponsored by American Legion Post 642, VFW Post 2591 and Voiture 333, the 40 & 8, featured a wreath-laying honoring the sacrifices of those who served in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and all other US conflicts.

US Air Force Tech Sgt. Thomas Miller was the guest speaker for the event. Miller is an 11-year veteran from Olathe, Kan., who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Paul Bennett served as emcee for the ceremony, which included the raising and lowering of the US flag by Smith-Cotton JROTC Tiger Battalion Colors Detail.

George A. Whiteman Memorial Post 642 presented the Colors. Sedalia Mayor Stephen J. Galliher recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Tony Gallagher, Chef de Gare Voiture 40 & 8, provided the invocation. Richard Deford sang the National Anthem.

VFW Post 2591 Firing Squad provided a 21-gun salute, followed by the playing of Taps by Richard Barnier. American Legion Post 642 Chaplain Allen Hawkins provided the Benediction. Photos by Randy Kirby, Sedalia Weekly Observer.
