InstrStaffoftheyear2014State Fair Community College honored the top instructor, adjunct instructor and staff member for 2013-2014 in a ceremony May 9 in the Yeater Learning Center on the Sedalia campus.

Randy Crawshaw, English Composition, Literature and Living Religions instructor, was named instructor of the year; Stacie Wild, psychology instructor and guidance and career services coordinator for the State Fair Career and Technology Center, was named adjunct instructor of the year; and Polly Grapes, director of the SFCC Campus Store, was named staff member of the year.

Students nominated all candidates, and a panel of students, faculty and staff chose the winners.

Crawshaw has taught at SFCC for 18 years and has served on numerous college committees such as retention, curriculum, institutional effectiveness, distance learning, and assessment. He has also served as a sponsor for student organizations such as Phi Theta Kappa and Campus Fellowship.

Students call Crawshaw a creative, upbeat, positive, energetic, and passionate instructor. “He uses activities that incorporate different learning styles to keep students engaged, and gives encouragement and validation,” said one student. “He is truly an amazing instructor. He connects with students and makes every class fun and interesting.”

Wild has worked at SFCC for 10 years and has taught Psychology for three years. She has been involved with the Allied Health Academy, core advising and SkillsUSA competitions.

Students say Wild makes learning fun and interesting and uses various teaching methods so everyone can understand and retain the information. She is precise, to the point, and makes them want to come back to class each day.

“She does an awesome job engaging her students in the lesson,” said a student. She makes things personal, so I feel like I’m learning something I will actually use in life. She is a wonderful teacher with a heart geared toward her students’ success.”

Grapes has worked at the college for 25 years. She also is an adjunct instructor in the Business Program and a professional speaker for SFCC’s office of Lifelong Learning. Her involvement with committees, sponsorships and special projects ranges from facilities, commencement planning, and student orientation to coordinating and decorating for Jingle on the Green and numerous student and employee events.

Students said Grapes loves her job, is dedicated to SFCC and is a wonderful role model for students. She serves on several college committees and also is involved in the community. One student said, “She is always looking for ways to help out at SFCC. The students here are her main goal, whether it is providing what they need through the Campus Store or just lending them a hand when they need it.”

Photos of the honorees are displayed in the Yeater Learning Center lobby. They also received plaques and will be recognized May 16 at commencement.
