FoodDrive-8Local 139 of the National Association of Letter Carriers collected donated food for the annual Letter Carriers Food Drive on Saturday, May 10 and brought it to the Sedalia Post Office, where numerous volunteers from Salvation Army, the Lions Club and Crossbow Ministries were waiting to gather the donations for distribution to Open Door, Salvation Army, Show-Me Youth Christian Home and CASA food pantries.

United Way is a co-sponsor of the event nationally. The goal this year was 20,000 pounds. About 11,625 pounds were collected this year, in addition to $325 in cash, which counts as 1,625 pounds, according to food drive chair Julie Taylor.  Last year’s event generated 13,398 pounds. This was the 21st year for the event nationally, and the 20th locally.

Monetary donations were also accepted. One dollar counted as five pounds. Makes checks payable to the NALC, P.O. Box, 2001, Sedalia, Mo., 65301. Photos by Randy Kirby, Sedalia Weekly Observer.
