“The Lady Vikings were ready to play today from the first game through the final out. We have been working hard on doing the little things right and today that came together for us. In the field we played the best defense we’ve played all year. Madison did a great job in the circle all day and her defense backed her up well. Coach Redmon and I tell Madison that she doesn’t have to strike out every batter, she can rely on the rest of the team to get outs. She did that today and was smart about her pitch placement so that hitters would hit ground outs and fly balls.
“At the plate, the entire team worked hard. We have been in a hitting slump and today we busted out of it. The girls were patient and waited for pitches that they hit well. We got back to hitting like Lady Viking softball players and hitting the ball hard. As a team we hit several doubles throughout the day. I tell the girls we don’t have to hit home runs we just need to hit solid line drives and make the other defense work and that’s exactly what they did.
“The championship game against Green Ridge was a rematch of last year. The girls were excited to play them again and we started out very well. Sam Unkel is a great pitcher and is very intelligent about her pitch placement but we were able to foul off pitches until she threw the pitch that we could hit. This was a very close game from the beginning and Green Ridge came back to take the lead by a run. In the 7th inning the Lady Vikings went on a two out rally to take the lead and then our defense stepped up once again.
“This group of girls have a warrior spirit and they never quit. Our mantra is Kia Kaha which means Forever Strong and that is exactly what they are. They fight until the end and they know that they will always be forever strong no matter what and for that spirit and fight in them I’m extremely proud. This is a great group of girls to work with and I am fortunate to be their coach, they make my job very easy and a whole lot of fun!! For the second year in a row they have been named Kaysinger Conference Champions,” commented Dabecka Kirk, La Monte R-IV head softball coach. Photos by Randy Kirby, Sedalia Weekly Observer.
