The 17th Annual Cupid’s Ball “The Journey to Oz,” sponsored by the Women’s Service League, was held Saturday, March 29 at Smith-Cotton High School, 2010 Tiger Pride Blvd., with 430 guests in attendance.
“We raised additional funds from the silent auction items: MU SEC Cotton Bowl autographed football, two tickets to the 2015 Ball, anOz-themed basket and the 50/50 raffle-which the winner donated back. Just over $10,000 was raised before expenses. And two large boxes of children’s books were donated by guests,” said WSL spokesperson Susan Mergen.
“Proceeds will support children and women in our community. We have not decided exactly where to donate the funds from proceeds from his year’s ball. Special thanks to the great staff at Smith Cotton High School, who worked with us on this event twice this year due to the weather-related issues,” she added.
“Our wonderful volunteers: high school students and adults that dressed up as munchkins — The Lion (Jackie Borchers), Dorothy (Sabrina Marquess) & Toto (London Nicole Marquess), Glinda-the Good Witch (Gena Swearingen) and The Wicked Witch (Emma Wilhelm),” said Mergen.
Plans are already underway for the 18th annual ball, she noted. –Story submitted. Photos by Randy Kirby, Sedalia Weekly Observer.
