Sonnik survived six rounds of spelling against 17 other students who were chosen from six teams at the school (three teams from fifth grade and three teams from sixth grade) to take part in the finals on Tuesday in the school’s media center. Sonnik said she has been studying for the spelling bee since October.
Sonnik will travel to Washington, DC, in late May to compete at the national level.
Taking second place was sixth Hunter Sparks and in third place was sixth grader Dylan Fournier.
SMS Media Center Specialist Debbie Ives served as moderator for the event, attended by several parents and siblings.
