In November of last year, Piece O’ Peculiar Thrift Store opened at 506 S. Ohio in historic downtown Sedalia. Piece O’ Peculiar operates as a not-for-profit organization and its sole purpose is to help provide funding for The Embassy, a restoration ministry, as well as providing a stable environment for those that The Embassy help.
The News-Journal recently spoke with The Embassy’s Executive Director Pastor Gary Smith and the manger of Piece O’ Peculiar, Amanda Bobbitt, about the purpose behind the new business addition to downtown Sedalia.
“The purpose of this was not to make a lot of money, but to help fund The Embassy,” Pastor Gary Smith said.
“The purpose is to help fund The Embassy and to give opportunity to those looking for a change, whether it be in the work force, social skills, personal outlook and spiritual growth,” Bobbitt added.
Pastor Smith followed up by briefly explaining the purpose of The Embassy.
“The Embassy is a restoration ministry. It has been mislabeled as a homeless shelter. People that want to change their life, we are there to help them,” Smith said.
Bobbitt was asked how she became involved in the managing of Piece O’ Peculiar.
“I was actually introduced to Gary’s wife and they took me in. I’ve been with them about eight months. I went through the program,” Bobbitt said.
Pastor Smith added, “Amanda is one of the initial ladies in the program. She has done a lot of transforming. She is a totally different girl than who stood in front of us eight months ago. I am very proud of her.”
Currently, besides Bobbitt, Piece O’ Peculiar has two volunteers and Bobbitt is very happy with that number.
“It is nice to keep that number. It shows that there is progress in the purpose,” she said.
Piece O’ Peculiar carries a wide variety of items for sale. They include furniture items, clothing, home décor, some electronics, kids stuff, book and music.
All of the items for sale come from donations. Any monies made from the sales goes back to help fund The Embassy.
Piece O’ Peculiar is located at 506 S. Ohio and they are open 10am to 3pm, Monday through Friday. Their phone number is (660) 281-4115. People should feel free to visit them and browse their selection. All sales made go toward a good cause. Photos by Randy Kirby, Sedalia News Journal.
