The Sedalia Area Literacy Council visited the MVCAA Pettis County Head Start Centers with a bundle of books for the preschoolers. The Council’s Collection of Nursery Rhymes was a big hit with the 138 children who received them. Pam Regan, Youth Coordinator for the Workforce Development Board of West Central Missouri presented each Head Start child with their own personal copy of the Nursery Rhymes Collection.
The books were created by the Literacy Council and included illustrations from the winning entries of Sedalia #200 4th grade Literacy Council’s 2011 and 2012 bookmark contest. The book also provided parents and caregivers with tips on reading to children from ages birth through 5. According to MVCAA Early Childhood and Family Development Director Cindy Gabbert, “These kinds of gestures go beyond just the excitement on the children’s face when they get a new book. These activities go a long way in promoting early literacy and the dividends can be seen in the area of academic achievement.”
