Warrensburg resident receives scholarship

Tim Russell of Warrensburg is one of the first recipients of The Gary Moll Memorial Scholarship. The $1000 scholarship can be used for tuition, books or housing. Sponsored by West-Central Independent Living Solutions, Tim plans to attend the University of Missouri – Columbia in the 2014 fall semester, eventually going into the legal field.

Tim is a senior at Warrensburg High School where he is a member of the National Honor Society, FFA and FBLA. An Eagle Scout from Boy Scout Troop 1031 and Venture Crew 850, his Eagle project was making care kits for rural fire victims. Tim is also a member of The Order of the Arrow. In addition to serving as President of the Chilhowee 4H Indians and a Junior Project Leader for Poultry, Tim is also the Junior Leader of the Mozarkite Rock Kids Club, a member of the Midwestern Bee Association, and attends the Northside Christian Church Youth Group. Tim has received the President’s Volunteer Service Award and the Prudential Spirit of Community award placing in the top 10% of Missouri Youth. He has volunteered for the United Way Park Event, Salvation Army Bell Ringing, Christmas Angel, MO State Fair Bee Booth, Boy Scout Camporees, Park and Recreation Egg stuffing, County Election Youth Judge, Toys for Tots, American Royal, collected food for the Food Pantry, and served as a Flag holder at Memorial Day events. Tim also attended Boys State in 2013. He is the son of Sherry Swope of Warrensburg and the grandson of Sue Swope of Chilhowee.

The Gary Moll Memorial Scholarship program, established by the Missouri Statewide Independent Living Council, is for Missouri students with a disability who are attending, or will be enrolling in, a junior college, college, university or accredited vocational school located in the state of Missouri. Qualified students applying for the Gary Moll Memorial Scholarship must be sponsored by a Missouri Center for Independent Living. Tim was sponsored by Allison Easterwood, Independent Living Supervisor for Benton, Henry and Johnson counties who worked with Tim at West-Central Independent Living Solutions (WILS). Kathy Kay, Executive Director of WILS, stated, “Tim is an exceptional young man and we are proud to have been able to sponsor him for this scholarship. He certainly deserves it!”

WILS is the Missouri Center for Independent Living (CIL) serving the counties of Benton, Henry, Johnson, Lafayette, Pettis and Saline, providing programs and services that help people with disabilities become or remain as independent as possible.
