Lavera Anna Holtzen Sanders, 87, of Cole Camp, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at Good Samaritan Care Center, Cole Camp. She was born on April 27, 1926, near Stover at Pyrmont, Mo., a daughter of Rudolph and Anna (Witte) Rugen.
She was baptized on May 9, 1926, and confirmed on April 2, 1939, at Trinity Lutheran Church at Pyrmont and attended grade school at Trinity Lutheran School, Pyrmont. In 1945, she graduated from Stover High School. After graduation, she was a housekeeper for the Charlie Brunkhorst Family. She later moved to Kansas City and worked for Hallmark Cards.
On May 14, 1950, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stover, she was united in marriage to Richard R. Holtzen. Upon her marriage, she became a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church at Lake Creek. She worked with her husband on their dairy farm. While dairying, she loved working with her cows. After the death of her husband Richard, on Jan. 2, 1981, she went to work at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Cole Camp as an aide, later, working in activities.
On July 23, 1983, at Bethlehem Baptist Church of rural Florence, she was united in marriage to John E. Sanders, who preceded her in death on Sept. 22, 1996.
She continued working at the nursing home until she became a resident there and was loved by all she worked with. Her favorite pastime was playing cards with her family and friends.
She is survived by: three daughters, Elizabeth Hazelrigg and her husband Alan of Cole Camp, Sharon Curtis of Cole Camp, and Maurine Koeller and her husband Alvin of Florence; four nephews, Dean Fischer and his wife Kathy of Blue Springs, Kenneth Fischer and his wife Roberta of Cole Camp, Wayne Fischer and his wife Phyllis of Stover, and Virgil Holsten and his wife Diane of Stover; two nieces, Verona Goetz and her husband Ed of Cole Camp and Geraldine Eckhoff of Barnett; nine grandchildren, David Hazelrigg, Clara (Bob) Merrill, Teresa Friedlander, Ada Buckley, Charla (John) Mackey, Jana (William) Scott, Keith (Hilda) Koeller, Kyle (Shannon) Koeller, and Kim (Tony) Tilman; 22 great-grandchildren; and eleven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph and Anna Rugen, her husband, Richard Holtzen, her husband, John Sanders, her sister, Edna Rugen, and her brother, Alvin Rugen.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, rural Cole Camp, with Pastor Michael Boothby officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, rural Cole Camp.
Pallbearers will be Scott Fischer, Jason Witt, Dennis Goetz, David Hazelrigg, Tony Tilman, and Keith Koeller.
A prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at the Fox Funeral Home in Cole Camp, with visitation to follow from 7 to 8 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions be given to Our Savior Radio Ministry or the donor’s choice of charity in care of the funeral home.
