Seniors Wade Hagebusch, left, Cole Simoncic, center, and Aaron Walters were named to the Academic All-State team.

The Smith-Cotton High School football program held its season-ending banquet on Wednesday night in the high school cafeteria. Almost 200 players, coaches, cheerleaders and family members gathered for a carry-in dinner and awards ceremony.

Coach Mark Johnson, who retired at the end of the 2013 season, announced that senior Cole Simoncic was the inaugural recipient of the Coach Johnson Family Football Student Athlete of the Year Award. The $500 scholarship will be awarded annually to a full-time starter on the S-C football team in his senior year; additional requirements include maintaining a minimum 3.75 grade-point average at the end of their junior year, playing four years of football for S-C and never having been suspended for use of illegal drugs, alcohol or tobacco.

Senior Chance McMullin, the West Central Conference’s offensive co-most valuable player, received the William “Bill” Noland Award. Senior John Gilger won the Charles Van Dyne Memorial Award, given to the outstanding lineman, and senior Jacob Weeks took the Ralph “Stub” Dow Memorial Award as the outstanding back. Three Tigers – Simoncic, Wade Hagebusch and Aaron Walters – were named to the Academic All-State football team.

McMullin and Simoncic also were named to the KMZU Dream Team. Top special teams player went to senior Dakota Brown, and senior J.D. Hails was named the top scout team player. Photos courtesy Sedalia School District 200.
