In a Nov. 2 appointment, Rev. Michael P. Murphy, pastor of St. Ann Catholic Church in Warsaw, has been named dean of the Sedalia/Lake Area Catholic parishes deanery. This appointment was made at the Catholic chancery office in Jefferson City, by Bishop John R. Gaydos, bishop of the Diocese of Jefferson City. A dean represents to area pastors and parishioners, the information, projects, and consolation of the diocesan bishop of the contemporary church.
This allows for the flow of communication between a deanery and a bishop, often located at a distance.
Fr. Murphy was ordained to the priesthood at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Jefferson City, on Dec. 9, 1989. and has served at various Catholic parishes in central and south-central Missouri. St. Patrick Church, Rolla was his previous parish assignment. In July 2012 he was named pastor of St. Ann Parish, Warsaw; and also the parish of SS. Peter and Paul at Cole Camp. As religious community priests had served these parishes before, he is the first diocesan priest to serve as pastor. Until 2012, priests of the Society of the Precious Blood had pastured these and other area parishes since 1956, when the Diocese of Jefferson City was established.
The sixteen Catholic parishes which are in the Sedalia/Lake Area Deanery (geographical area) are St. John’s, Bahner; SS. Peter and Paul, Cole Camp; St. Anthony, Camdenton; Our Lady of Snows, Climax Springs; Sacred Heart, Eldon; St. Patrick Parish, Laurie; St. Bernadette, Hermitage; Our Lady of Snows, Mary’s Home; St. Anthony at St. Anthony; St. Lawrence at St. Elizabeth; St. Thomas the Apostle, at St. Thomas; Sacred Heart and St. Patrick, Sedalia; St. Andrew the Apostle, Tipton; St. Philip Benizi ,Versailles; and St. Ann, Warsaw.
