Windsor’s Greyhounds took an early lead and never gave up but they were bested by Sacred Heart 32-20 in a Kaysinger Conference matchup. Windsor’s defense couldn’t get off the field as the Gremlins ran 63 plays to the Greyhounds’ 40.
Windsor took the opening drive down the field with +10 yard runs by Trenton Johnson, Luke Roberts and Brett Rosebrough. On a fourth down play, Johnson scrambled into the end zone for a Windsor six point lead. Each team traded three and out series before Sacred Heart took possession on their six yard line. Staying on the ground the Gremlins ran the ball down the field ending up with a quarterback sneak for the score. They connected on their extra point to take a 7-6 lead.
Sacred Heart scored again as Michael Hoehne had the longest gain of the night with a 67 yard TD. After a short series by Windsor the Gremlins made it to midfield. Rosebrough then intercepted a pass to Windsor the ball back to close off the first half. Johnson connected with Rosebrough for an 18-yard pass and then to Jerry Nelson for an 18-yard gain. From the two-yard line Johnson found Roberts in the end zone. Johnson added a two-point conversion run to knot the score at 14 going into halftime.
Sacred Heart had a fifteen play drive to open the second half but turned the ball over on downs to Windsor. After a completion to Mason Briggs the Greyhounds bobbled the snap to give Sacred Heart back the ball. The Gremlins’ quarterback ran in the final four yards for the touchdown. Sacred Heart scored on their next possession on a long pass to put the score at 26-14.
In the fourth quarter Windsor sliced the lead back to six points as Johnson connected with Rosebrough who outran the Gremlins for a 45-yard TD. Windsor attempted an onside kick that they recovered a yard short of the ten-yard mark giving the ball back to the Gremlins. Sacred Heart ended the scoring on the next series to finish the score at 32-20.
Johnson completed 11 of 21 passes for 182 yards. Leading receiver was Rosebrough with 4 catches for 86 yards. Roberts caught three passes and Nelson and Briggs each caught two. Johnson led the Greyhounds rushing attack with 69 yards on 13 carries.
The defense was led by Roberts with 17 tackles, Johnson with nine and Nate Hargett with eight. Rosebrough and Nelson each had six tackles. Jakob Erdmann and Phillip Kroh each got a sack on the night.
The Greyhounds are on the road this weekend as they play Cole Camp. Game time is 7 p.m.
