A Smith-Cotton High School writing class visited with Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Ryan Gabrielson Friday morning through video teleconferencing technology.

Gabrielson is a senior reporter covering criminal justice at The Center for Investigative Reporting in Berkeley, Calif., and a former co-worker of Journalistic Writing teacher Bob Satnan, who arranged the presentation.

Gabrielson shared his reporting and writing processes and details about his investigations into a state-run police force’s inability to solve crimes at California developmental centers and of immigration enforcement by the Maricopa County (Ariz.) Sheriff’s Office.

He encouraged the students to provide analysis and insight in their writing, and said that no matter what career path they choose, to ensure success, “You’re going to have to work your tail off.” Photo courtesy Sedalia School District 200.
