Members of George A. Whiteman Memorial Post 642 attended the National Convention of The American Legion in Houston, Texas, August 22-28. Members attended numerous committee meetings, banquets, and were treated to many presentations on the convention floor.

The guest opening MC was news journalist Rita Cosby, who spoke of the trials and tribulations of her father growing up in Poland when Nazi Germany invaded that country in 1939. She expressed her deep feelings for the Veteran community, and then presented many award winners along with then-National Commander Jim Koutz.

The highlight of the morning award presentations was the National Oratorical Champion Agnes Reiger of North Kansas City, Mo. The biggest highlight of the National Convention came when our own Post Color Guard (and State Color Guard) was announced as the winner in the Military Class; the winner’s cup is on display at the Post. Members of the Color Guard were: Joseph Cochran, Charles Brandkamp, Todd Sidwell and James Petterson.

Other members of the Guard that were present were Darren Ross and Ed Farmer. Other Legion Family Members attending were: Post member Dan Loucks, Post Adjutant and State Historian Paul Bennett, Auxiliary members Kathy Petterson, Phyllis Ross and Becky Erfurth. The new National Commander is Mr. Dan Dillinger of Virginia.
