September 1, 2013 marks an important day for a healthier Sedalia. The indoor smoking ordinance, passed by the City Council, goes into effect. For everyone who lives, works or visits Sedalia, we look forward to lower heart attack rates, lower numbers of acute asthma attacks, particularly in our children and fewer young people that begin to smoke. These are all benefits enjoyed by other communities with smoke free ordinances.
Studies have also shown that when a smoking ordinance goes into effect, people who have been thinking about quitting smoking make the decision to try to quit because there are few public places where smoking is permitted. As anyone who has quit smoking will say, quitting is not easy, but the benefits are great.
The Pettis County Health Center would like to share the following resources for community members who want to quit smoking:
1. Talk with your health care provider. There are medications that can help people quit. Many of these medications are covered by insurance and Medicaid. The Health Center is trying to find low cost options for those without insurance and will share that information when available.
2. Sign up for the American Lung Association Freedom from Smoking program at Bothwell Regional Health Center. The next class begins September 9, 2013. The cost is $45 and scholarships are available. More information is available by calling 660-829-8855 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to register for the class.
3. Call the Missouri Quit Line at 1-800-QUIT NOW (1-800-784-8669) to talk to a Quitline Coach. The service is free and has successfully helped people quit across Missouri. The program is sponsored by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. More information is also available at www.quitnow.net/Missouri
4. Utilize technology to help with quitting. There are many apps for iPhone and Android systems. Some have a cost, but 2 free apps include Lifestrong MyQuit Coach (iPhone) and Quit Now: My QuitBuddy (iPhone and Android)
