The past 20 months have been a very busy time for Fav Trip owners Mohammed Sazad and Babir Sultan. In the 20 months since opening their first FavTrip in Sedalia, located at 216 W. Broadway, the duo has opened two more Fav Trips. One is located in Leavenworth, Kan., and the other in Independence, Mo.
“This is our first Fav Trip location. We have expanded to three locations now, but Sedalia is our baby store,” Sultan said.
He added, “Sedalia is a learning experience, since it is our first challenge.”
Both Sazad and Sultan are from Brooklyn, New York and both have backgrounds in tech, but with a lull in the tech industry they decided to try something different.
Sultan first moved to Missouri six years ago and Sazad made the move two years ago. In January, Sazad relocated to Sedalia to be closer to the store.
Sazad was asked how business has been since opening in January of 2012.
“It is going great. What sets us apart from the other guys is that we love customer’s input. Facebook is a huge deal for us. It is about what the customers want. The customers are important. We love the family approach,” Sazad said.
He added, “You come in every day and we have your stuff ready at the counter. It impresses them each and every time.”
Not many convenience stores use social media, but Fav Trip sets itself apart from those others by having a strong presence online. The Fav Trip Facebook page is a valuable tool that is used to inform loyal customers of sales, new product info and happy hour gas prices. For people that want to find Fav Trip on Facebook, they can visit their page at www.facebook.com/favtripsedalia.
One way that Fav Trip stands out from their competitors is the Home of the Happy Hour Gas Prices promotion that they have every day.
Everyday from noon to 2 p.m. customers will receive five cents off per gallon of gas that they purchase, whether they use cash or credit. Fav Trip also offers members of the Elks Lodge a five-cent-off-per-gallon discount if they pay in cash.
Another thing that sets Fav Trip apart from their competitors is the fact that they do not sell alcohol. Sazad was asked about this and if it was something that was planned from the beginning.
“We felt that it would be better if we didn’t deal with alcohol. People see us as a family store. With our size and location near a school, it made sense,” Sazad explained.
He added,” We are the only convenience store in Sedalia that doesn’t sell alcohol.”
Currently Fav Trip employs five people and they are open seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. They are currently looking into becoming a 24-hour-a-day convenience store in the near future.
