Child Safe of Central Missouri is pleased to announce that the Champion for Children Tax Credits (formerly known as the ‘Children in Crisis’ Tax Credits) have been approved for use by the state of Missouri. Qualified Child Safe donors will receive a 50 percent Missouri tax credit for their donation to Child Safe in 2013.
According to Carolyn Green, Child Safe of Central Missouri’s executive director, these tax credits have been a significant vehicle used by the child advocacy center over the past six years. The Champion for Children tax credits are available for individuals and businesses who donate $100 or more to Child Safe. These 50% tax credits can be applied to individual income tax, corporate income tax or any other tax incurred under the provisions of Chapter 143, RSMo. All donations made on or after Jan. 1, 2013 qualify for these credits.
Green explained that donations made through the Champion for Children tax credit program are unrestrictive income. This provides Child Safe with the flexibility to help the organization better serve the needs of children and families while fulfilling the mission of the organization. Child Safe is committed to serving children who are alleged victims of severe physical or sexual abuse and providing advocacy for their non-offending family members. Child Safe provides forensic interviews, sexual assault medical exam referrals and advocacy services in response to allegations of child sexual abuse, severe physical abuse, severe neglect, witness to homicide, witness to abuse and drug endangered children.
According to Green, “Our goal is to limit the number of interviews a child is subjected to by bringing together all disciplines involved (Children’s Division, law enforcement, Juvenile Office, Prosecutor, etc.) in a child-friendly setting in order to minimize the trauma to the child.” Dollars generated through the state-approved tax credit program will support the necessary programs offered by Child Safe to children from eleven central Missouri counties. Donors taking advantage of the 50 percent tax credits will help support educational programs for children, mandated reporters and the community and make necessary training available for advocacy professionals.
