Thirty four Girl Scouts took part in a overnight campout event at Camp Sacajawea Friday night. After the girls set up their tents, they made smores by the campfire. The campout was part of a four-day event at the camp, which is in danger of being shut down permanently by the Girl Scout Council due to severe financial problems.
If Camp Sacajawea is closed the nearest Council property will be 20 minutes north of Columbia, it was noted.
The chief executive officer of the Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland is asking for comments before the Council makes a decision on the proposal to “divest and designate proceeds to be used for future capital improvements.”
Some local events will be dropped because of no affordable, adequate facility, local scouts leaders said.
