About 35 members of Smith-Cotton JROTC were among the many volunteers placing American flags of the graves of US veterans early Saturday morning, in observance of Memorial Day weekend.

The event was organized by the 40 & 8, and involved three cemeteries — Crown Hill, Memorial Gardens and Highland Gardens. A free breakfast, compliments of the 40 & 8, was served at American Legion Post 642 to those who helped out with the project, which involved about 2,500 flags.
