The Sedalia Downtown Business Boosters met on Wednesday, May 8. President, Jackie Fike, called the meeting to order and introduced the featured speaker, Donna Bottcher, of Pleasant Hill. Donna captivated the business group with her enthusiastic description and highlights of the life of Anna Rose Baker, the young lady selected as queen for Scudda Hoo, Scudda Hay, the movie premiering in Sedalia in 1948. Donna also announced Anna Rose’s generous gift to the downtown group to use her name and her memorabilia to establish an annual Scudda Hoo, Scudda Hay Day in her honor. Anna Rose, a Sedalia native, became a sought-after model, appearing on the cover of more than 75 magazines, and a Hollywood star appearing in several movies.

As a bit of Holly wood trivia – in the early days of Anna Rose’s Hollywood life, her next door neighbor was Clint Eastwood. Clint had just been selected for the part in the Rawhide television series. The series depicted cowboys driving cattle to Sedalia and other railheads. Scudda Hoo, Scudda Hay also has a piece of little known trivia – it was the first film role for Hollywood legend, Marilyn Monroe – she had a one line part in the movie.

The Sedalia Downtown Business Boosters will be challenging the original groups who supported the event and additional interested parties to participate in the queen contest, parade and other related events. Proceeds from the events will be used for the refurbishing of the Uptown Theatre.

Pettis County, Missouri has always been known for their breeding stock of Missouri mules. Missouri mules were a preferred source for the US Army in World War 1 as well as for farming operations in the state. Sedalia was chosen as the location for the premiere of the movie, Scudda Hoo, Scudda Hay, because of the breeding, sales and history of the legendary Missouri mule.

In other business, the US 50 Highway Coast to Coast Garage Sale still has space available on Main Street for booth rental. Call Don at 826-8383 for booth rental information. Sidewalk sales from businesses on both Main and Ohio will be ongoing during the coast to coast sale.

The Sedalia Downtown Business Boosters meets every Wednesday at 8:15 at the Maple Leaf Tea Room, 106 West Main. All persons interested in the downtown are encouraged to attend and offer their ideas to promote the historic district.
