Scott Joplin Foundation Board President and long time director at Bothwell Regional Health Center Nevin Almquist has been living in Sedalia since 1967 and he has been making the most of his time here ever since.

Almquist was born in Osage, Iowa and he attended high school there until graduating in 1959. Osage was a small town near the Minnesota state line.

During his time in high school Almquist was very active in sports including basketball, football and track.

Almquist was accomplished enough in football and track to go on to compete at the University of Northern Iowa.

While at the University of Northern Iowa, Almquist received an undergraduate degree in Education, before moving on to attend Indiana University.

While attending Indiana University, he received his graduate degree in Health and Safety, and Athletic Training.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Almquist went on to attend the University of Iowa and received his degree in Physical Training.

Almquist was asked if he knew at an early age that physical training was the field he would want to pursue.

“In eighth grade I wrote a paper on physical therapy, so I knew early on that my career was going to be physical therapy,” Almquist said.

For one year prior to going back to graduate school, Almquist was a school teacher. After graduate school, Almquist moved to Sedalia in 1967 and soon became the director of physical therapy for Bothwell.

Almquist would remain in that position for 20 years before moving on to the position of director for a program at Bothwell called Lifetime Plus.

Almquist stayed in that position until 2006 when he retired.

Almquist is currently the board president for the Scott Joplin Foundation and he has been in that position for close to 12 years. It is a position that keep him busy and close to music.

“I’ve always had an interest in music. Sedalia used to have a barbershop quartet group called the State Fair Statesmen. There were 60 or so of us that got together and sang.

“I was always interested in that era of music that includes Ragtime, Jazz and Dixieland,” Almquist said.

Almquist has been married to his wife Jean for 43 years and together they have two children. Their daughter Denise still lives in Sedalia, and their son Kevin.

Kevin and his wife Suzanne are located in Omaha and they have four children.

Almquist was asked what kind of activities he enjoys during his downtime.

“I enjoy golfing, fishing and outdoorsy stuff. I obviously enjoy being with my grand kids and family. We have a strong family and that is very important to me,” Almquist said.
