ROLLA, MO (03/28/2013)(readMedia)– A team of students from Missouri University of Science and Technology will travel to southern Illinois to test the principles of bridge building by constructing a scale model of a steel bridge as part of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Mid-Continent Student Conference.
Austin Shull, a junior in architectual engineering from La Monte, will participate in the event.
The conference will be held Thursday, April 4, through Saturday, April 6, at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Ill. Missouri S&T’s Steel Bridge Team will compete with other regional collegiate teams to construct its bridge as fast as possible.
The group will be judged on bridge weight, construction speed and rigidity. Aesthetics are scored if needed as a tie-breaker. Penalties are assessed for infractions ranging from dropping bolts, holding two pieces of the bridge at once and stepping over designated lines.
