Sophomore guard Kenny Chery earned All-Region 16 honors for the second time in his SFCC career. He is the first Roadrunner to win back-to back All-Region honors since Marqus Mitchell in 2002 and 2003.
Chery also finished second in the voting for Region Player of the Year. Chery averages 16.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest. He also has dished out 103 assists so far this season and leads the team in steals with 47.
“Kenny has been consistent for two years,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “He’s gotten better and better. For him to finish second in the Player of the Year voting is a credit to his work ethic.”
Freshman guard Joe Thomasson also received All-Region honors. Thomasson was the team’s second-leading scorer, averaging 13.9 points per game. He leads the team in assists with 147 for the season.
Freshman guard Kevin Punter earned honorable mention All-Region honors. Punter averages 13.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest. He has registered 37 steals for the season.
“Thomasson and Punter have been thrown into the fire since the beginning of the season,” said Thomas. “They have started since day one. I’ve been very pleased with their progression as players and student athletes. They’ve come a long way in a short time.
“We have a balanced team. It hasn’t been just one player who has carried the team all year. We’ve had several guys step up and make plays and do good things this year. I think all three of these guys are deserving of this recognition.”
The Roadrunners will play the Mineral Area College Cardinals in their region tournament semifinal matchup at 8 p.m. today (March 1).
