With the game on the line, great players want the ball in their hands.
Coe Camp senor post player Emily Pritzel found herself in that situation at the W-K Holiday Shootout back in December at State Fair Community College.
With the Lady Bluebirds down one to the Crest Ridge Lady Cougars with 5.6 seconds left in the game, the 5-foot-11 Pritzel was at the line for two shots and a chance to give Cole Camp a win.
Pritzel made both charity shots and Crest Ridge got off an off-balance shot at the other end as Cole Camp reversed its unfortunate one-point loss to Crest Ridge in the 2011 Shootout.
“I would say winning the (Kaysinger) Conference Tournament my sophomore year and then making the two free throws to beat Crest Ridge in the W-K this year,” said the 18-year old Pritzel of her high school athletic highlights.
Already a four-year letterman in volleyball, playing her fourth season of high school basketball and plans to play her fourth season of softball this spring, Pritzel said basketball is her favorite sport.
“Basketball,” she said, obviously looking for a reason why. “I guess it’s the one I’m best at, I don’t know. I’ve always loved the sport.”
Pritzel made All Kaysinger Conference her junior year in basketball. She is on course this season to repeat that honor, as she and teammate Kaleena Logan have swapped the scoring average leader spot for the Lady Bluebirds this season.
Pritzel is an excellent student, with a 3.78 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, scored a 25 on the ACT and is ranked 11th out of 71 students in her Senior class.
She has been accepted at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. She made this reporter proud in that she plans to major in journalism and photography.
“In think sports and academics are equally important,” said Pritzel. “First of all, you have to have the grades to play the sports. Grades can get you farther, but sports teach you a lot of things beyond the game. They especially teach you to get along and work well with others. They teach you discipline and work ethic.”
Pritzel is taking or has taken a number of weighted courses at Cole Camp: College Algebra, Honors English IV and has taken Honors English I, II and III, English Composition, Psychology and Chemistry.
Besides the three sports teams, Pritzel is President of the FBLA, Vice President of the FCCLA, is
Treasurer of the National Honor Society, is a member of the Encore Show Choir and the C (Letterman’s) Club.
Pritzel played volleyball at the Lutheran School for Coach Shelley Oelrichs from fourth through eighth grade, and just completed four years of high school volleyball. She played basketball from fourth grade through the eighth grade at the Lutheran School, and now is in her fourth season of varsity basketball at the high school. An All Conference first baseman in softball, she plans to play her fourth season of high school softball starting next month.
In what little spare she has, Pritzel enjoys photography and spending time with her friends and family.
She has a younger brother, Alex, 15 and a freshman at Cole Camp. She is the daughter of Judith and Steve Pritzel, Cole Camp.
