Horace Mann Elementary School was alive with activity on Literacy Night, Wednesday, Jan. 30, when several community groups came to read to students in the classroom.

Some of the community guest readers included 15 Smith-Cotton High School JROTC cadets, “Smiley” the Rodeo Clown (Mr. Pettigrew), dancers from Studio A Dance Academy, race car driver Carl Lewis, H.A. Perez, Becky Brownfield, SFCC men and women basketball players, Mid-Mo Outlaws football players, Outlaw Bootleggers, Sedalia Public Library Foundation, past and present Horace Mann staff.

Principal Todd Fraley addressed parents, students and readers at the start of the well-attended event.

Literacy Night was preceded by a Horace Mann Title One “Visual Thinking Strategies” (VTS) Workshop, with special guest Vicki Weaver, Daum Museum coordinator. The students created their own chalk for the event.

The event was complete with a book giveaway and $1 hot dogs. Photos by Randy Kirby, Sedalia News Journal.
