The Smith-Cotton High School Jazz Band performed at the Missouri Valley Jazz Festival on Saturday, Jan. 13. The band had a very strong showing as one of the eight bands at the festival, a non-competitive event held at MVC in Marshall.

The band received comments from Marshall native and Downbeat magazine’s ‘Educator of the Year’ for 2000 Clarence Smith and Grammy nominated UMKC professor Bobby Watson. Watson also cliniced the group on stage following their performance.

Three S-C students received ‘Outstanding Musicianship” awards, shown from left to right: Jacob Douglas, Andrew Halsell and Logan Fluty.

The band’s next performance will be at Rockbridge high school in Columbia on Feb. 2 for the Mizzou Jazz Fest. Submitted photo.
