“Let Freedom Ring” was the theme of the 2013 Martin Luther King, Jr., Day Celebration, held Monday at Sacred Heart and the Sedalia Municipal Building. A free breakfast at the Sacred Heart cafeteria provided by the Pettis County Community Partnership preceded the church service.

The service included musical appearances by members of the Boys and Girls Club, the Beard Family and Amigos de Cristo youth.

A march from Sacred Heart to City Hall then took place, with the music of “If I Had a Hammer” (by Peter, Paul and Mary) playing on a portable boom box.

At the Municipal Building service, Mayor Horn welcomed those in attendance and delivered a proclamation. Dr. Rhonda Chalfant delivered a “parable for modern times” followed by the singing of “My County Tis of Thee” led by Richard DeFord. Pastor Manny Rodriguez delivered the benediction at the event, which was emceed by James Graves.

That brief program was followed by a look at the new Black History Center near North Ohio and Lima.

The 2013 MLK Jr. Planning Committee was comprised of Dr. Rhonda Chalfant, Rozanne Parker, Tonya Fennell, Mayor Elaine Horn, James Graves, Marge Harlan and Cheri Heeren. Photos by Randy Kirby, Sedalia News Journal.
