This past Halloween Michael and Donna Randall followed their dreams and opened Heavy’s Treasure Thrift Store in historic downtown Sedalia.

The store is named after Michael’s Uncle Heavy.

“It is named after my Uncle Heavy McNish. He works for the city, but he is retiring after the first of the year,” Randall said.

Heavy’s Treasure Thrift Store carries a wide variety of items for people to peruse and they have new items in stock constantly.

“We are putting out new stuff daily. We have totes of stuff that we are pricing and putting in totes, and when stuff sells we put it out. My wife is a workaholic,” Michael said.

The Randalls were asked if they were thrift store shoppers before opening their own store and also where they found enough items to open.

“We enjoyed thrift shopping. I worked in retail and I loved working in retail. I also loved going to thrift stores and auctions,” Donna said.

She added, “We planned on opening in the spring, but I lost my job after three-and-a-half months. My position was outsourced. We decided to jump in with both feet and do it. I told him if we were going to do this, we do this now and with full force. After our first auction we had enough to open.

The Randalls were asked how business has been since opening, and what the response has been.

“Everybody says everything looks nice and neat, and that we have the best prices in town.

“It has been slow in getting the word out. Most of our customers stop because of our big yellow sign with flags all over it. It is the best kind of advertisement there is,” Michael said.

Down at Heavy’s the Randalls look to provide customers with personal service.

“If there is something people are looking for, and if we know there is an auction we will try to get it. We usually find the stuff,” Michael said.

Donna added, “I keep a list of names and numbers.”

The Randalls were asked if they enjoy being located in downtown Sedalia.

“We love being downtown. We looked at several buildings and because this was downtown this was what we wanted,” Donna said.

Michael added, “The people that walk in are lovely. They are nice as can be.”

The Randalls were asked what the best selling items are in the store.

“The main thing is household goods. Almost anything electrical, because we guarantee it. We have not had anyone bring anything back,” Michael said.

Heavy’s Treasure Thrift Store is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

They are also open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturdays but they are thinking of expanding Saturday hours.

Heavy’s is located at 506 S. Ohio and they can be reached by calling (66) 221-6355 or (660) 221-3094.

“We enjoy meeting and seeing new customers and our repeat customers. We are still learning and growing,” Donna said.
