Two long-standing Kaysinger Conference rivals – the Northwest Mustangs and the La Monte Vikings – got together Friday night in the first round of the 11th Annual W-K Holiday Shootout at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center on the State Fair Community College campus.
However, it turned out to be nothing more than a light practice for the Mustangs.
Coach Justin Smith’s Mustangs scored almost as many points in the first quarter as they would need to win.
Junior guard Cortlen Austin scored the game’s first four points as the Mustangs bolted out of the game to lead 13-2 after the first quarter and put it on cruise control from there to win going away 49-22.
La Monte, 2-6, couldn’t do anything right, shoot, handle the ball, rebound or play defense. The Vikings’ only score in the first quarter came on a jumper near the free throw line by junior Seth Johnson that tied the game for the first and only time at 2-2.
With five different players scoring in the first quarter, the Mustangs ended the first period on an 11-point run to lead 13-2 going into the second quarter.
Northwest, 3-5, went on an 8-0 run to start the second quarter and opened up a 21-2 lead before Joseph Arnett broke a 10-minute scoreless drought for La Monte.
With a 21-4 lead early in the second quarter, the Mustangs already had almost enough points to win.
Truman Leicher scored six in an 8-0 Mustang run before his squad went into the locker room with a 29-9 advantage at the half. Of Leicher’s six points in that second-quarter run, four came on breakaway layups after he made two straight steals.
La Monte didn’t break into double digits until two minutes into the third quarter but they trailed 35-11 by that time.
Northwest had a comfortable 45-16 lead after three quarters and started the mercy clock on a basket by Austin that made it 47-16. The mercy clock ran for three minutes before the Vikings got the gap under 30 against the Northwest reserves.
Austin led Northwest with 18 points. Leicher added 11 and Andrew Underwood nine.
Johnson led La Monte with seven points and Trent Ellis added six.
Northwest 47, La Monte 42
Showing a lot of heart and character, the Northwest Lady Mustangs kept the La Monte Lady Vikings from climbing to two games over .500 for the first time in years with a 47-42 win in the third game of the night in the W-K Holiday Shootout Friday.
Northwest, 2-6, led 14-9 after the first quarter, trailed 25-23 at the half and trailed 36-33 after three quarters.
There were four lead changes in the fourth quarter.
Paige Norfleet led the Lady Mustangs with 11 points and Jessi Zimmerman added eight.
Madison Harris led La Monte with seven points and one trey. Sandra Arroyo added five points and Cathy Butts four.
