Fern Burris

Fern E. Burris, 97, of Sedalia, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at Lake Regional Health System in Osage Beach.

She was born on Aug. 31, 1915, in Sweden, Mo., daughter of William Fredrick and Frenless Loftin Grote. On July 13, 1940, she married William G. “Bud” Burris, who preceded her in death on November 22, 1983.

Mrs. Burris was a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was an original co-owner and operator at Artistic Coiffeur Beauty Salon in Sedalia. She graduated from Ava High School, attended cosmetology school in Springfield, and attended Bolivar College. She had been a member of First Christian Church for over 65 years and was an active participant and coordinator of charitable efforts for those less fortunate. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 279 for over 50 years where she held the Worthy Matron position several times. She enjoyed reading, cross word puzzles, cooking, knitting, crocheting, and making afghans and quilts. She also enjoyed being outdoors and tending to her garden and flowers.

Surviving her are two daughters, Carol Shipp, and her husband, Durbin, of Gravois Mills, and Carla Massey, of Republic; five grandchildren, Rebecca Shipp, Heidi Saba, Matthew Massey, Brandon Massey and Spc. Shawn Massey; six great-grandchildren, Daniel Mullins, Morgan Morris, Madeline Saba, Michael Saba, Trinity Massey and Corbin Massey; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by seven siblings, Everett Grote, Anna Henson, Ralph Grote, Ica Murray, Mayme Scott, Cornie Grote and Ray Grote.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Heckart Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chad McMullin officiating.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.

Graveside services and burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Sweden Cemetery, east of Ava, Mo.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to First Christian Church or Meals on Wheels.
