S-C wrestlers take first step toward WCC title

 The West Central Conference championship has eluded the Smith-Cotton Tiger wrestling team in the past few years.

S-C took the first step toward that coveted title with a 66-18 win over St. Pius X in a West Central Conference match Thursday night at the S-C gym.

Starting with the 220-pound bout, S-C’s Kyler Taber picked up a forfeit win to give S-C a 6-0 lead in their season opener. At 225, S-C’s Dylan Keele notched a win by forfeit to make it 12-0.

At 106 pounds, the Warriors’ Patrick Keefer pinned S-C’s Kyle Perez at 4:51 of the first period to get St. Pius within 12-6. At 113 pounds, S-C’s Logan Parham won by forfeit to make it 18-6. At 120 pounds, S-C’s Luke Archibeque pinned James Carmichael 21 seconds into the second period to give S-C a 24-6 lead. At 126, S-C’s Zach Wooldridge pinned Vincent Guadagnabo just 42 seconds into the first period to make it 30-6.

At 132, S-C’s Caleb Hurley won by forfeit. At 138, S-C’s Colin Debow pinned Emanuel Michael early in the second period to make it 42-6.

At 145, S-C’s Pavel Tsymbal pinned Patrick Kirk in 40 seconds to put the Tiger lead to 48-6. The Warriors’ Zachary Angotti pinned Eli Kemp to make it 48-12. At 160 pounds, S-C’s Jacob Weeks pinned Trent Warboys to give S-C a 54-12 lead.

At 170 pounds, S-C’s Petr Tysmbal won by forfeit to make it 60-12. At 182 St. Pius’ Caleb Murphy pinned Wade Hagebusch for the Warriors’ final win of the night. In the 195-pound bout – the final match of the night, S-C’s Trevor Slivkov won by forfeit. Photos by Randy Kirby, Sedalia News Journal.
