The State Fair Community College Theatre Arts program has established a $10,000 endowed scholarship in honor of longtime arts supporters Jim and Barbara Cooney, Sedalia.

President Dr. Marsha Drennon made the surprise announcement Monday morning before a performance of the children’s theatre production “Honk!” for Cole Camp Elementary students at the Stauffacher Theatre on the Sedalia campus.

The scholarship will be named the James O. and Barbara Lamy Cooney Endowed Theatre Scholarship. It is being created with proceeds from the SFCC Foundation’s 2012 gala granted to the theatre program by the foundation.

“Barbara and Jim believe in providing arts education opportunities to students of all ages,” said Drennon. “Establishing a scholarship in their name is a wonderful way for the college to honor their years of support to the arts community and to State Fair Community College.”

The Cooneys, who attended the performance, financially supported the performance for the school. They were unaware of the scholarship or the planned announcement. Theatre Program Coordinator Eric Yazell also spoke. Photo submitted.
