Dorothy Hazel Rhodes Dey, 93, of Sedalia, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at her home.
She was born Aug. 29, 1919, in Green Ridge, a daughter of the late LeRoy and Ida Mae (Riley) Rhodes. On Feb. 1, 1941, in Columbia, SC, she married Edward Harold Dey, who preceded her in death on Nov. 7, 2002. As a military couple, they traveled the world serving their country and raising nine children.
After her husband retired from the Army, she returned to Sedalia in the spring of 1973 and went to work as Ward Secretary for Bothwell Regional Health Center in 1974. She retired in 1993.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was active in the Daughters of Isabella, Our Lady Prayer Group, Mary Immaculate Rosary Guild, Open Door Ministries and she served many funeral dinners. Her hobbies were her grandchildren, crocheting and making Rosaries for distribution in third world countries. She was steadfast in her Catholic Faith and in her devotion to her family.
She is survived by five sons, William Edward Dey, and his wife, Josephine, of Sedalia, Michael Joseph Dey, and his wife, Annette, of Severn, MD, Daniel Clyde Dey, and his wife Mavis, of New Bloomfield, John Leonard Dey, and his wife, Charlotte, of Racine, Wisc., Thomas Paul Dey, and his wife, Charity, of Bahner; four daughters, Sharon Louise Dey, of Sedalia, Mericay Michaels, and her husband, Richard, of Dillwyn, VA, Dorothy “Dee Dee” Dey, and her husband, Roger Mellenberger, of Genesee, Wisc., and Janet Anne Dey, of Atlanta, Ga.; a niece, Dorothy Mae Herrick, of Sedalia, a nephew, William Ross Dey, and his wife, Alma, of Sedalia; 22 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5 at Sacred Heart Church with Monsignor Makarewicz officiating. Pallbearers will be Catherine Dey, James Dey, Tracy Sisson, Joseph Shumow, Justin Dey, Annie Skelton, Jacob Dey and Alan Dey. Honorary pallbearers will be Jane Elbert, Michael Dey, Robert Dey, Kimberly Michaels, Tiffany Michaels, Richard Michaels, Jr., Anna Shumow, Rachel Dey, Austin Dey, Elissa Dey, Laurel Dey, Cabe Dey, Clara Dey and Jared Dey. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call after noon on Sunday, Nov. 4 at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel, with prayers of the Rosary beginning at 4 p.m. and visitation to follow until 6 p.m.
