S-C hosts Tennis Invitational, finishes with three points

Once again, the winner’s share of the hardware from the Smith-Cotton Lady Tiger Tennis Invitational left Sedalia.
Blue Springs South won the eight-team tournament Friday at the Liberty Park courts with 16 points. Helias took second wit 14.5 points and Jefferson City was third with 14. The other teams in the tourney were Hickman, Clinton, Moberly, Springfield Glendale and S-C.
The Lady Tigers finished with three points.
In singles, S-C’s Kathleen Matz lost to Erica McClain 8-8 (7-1 tiebreaker) of Blue Springs South in the first round. Matz rebounded to beat Hickman’s Sydney Attebry 6-6 (7-2 tiebreaker) and was eliminated by Hickman’s Clare Baldwin 6-0.
S-C #2 singles player Ashlee Slack lost to Baldwin 8-2 in the first round and was eliminated by Becca Shelton of Helias 6-4.
At #1 doubles, S-C’s Taylor and Bailey Smith downed Tessa Bartlett and Katie Keith of Clinton 9-7 in the first round. The Smith sisters lost to Courtney Reese and Allison Yoakam of Glendale 8-1 and were eliminated by Jefferson City’s #1 team 6-0.
S-C’s #2 doubles team of Leah Carr and Alyssa Schoen lost to Abbey Verslues and Casey Clogston of Helias 8-1 and were eliminated by Amber Morris and Katie Matheis of Moberly 6-0 in the consolation bracket to end S-C’s day in the tourney. Photos by Randy Kirby, Sedalia News Journal.
