Public Works Director Bill Beck checks out some of the mayoral portraits hanging in the City Council Chambers on August 6.
Sedalia Mayor Elaine Horn officially unveiled a gallery of portraits of 38 of Sedalia’s 55 mayors during a brief ceremony Monday night prior to the City Council meeting on Aug. 6.
Mayor Horn recognized several individuals for their contributions to the project, including City Clerk Arlene Silvey, who spearheaded the project. Also named were Community Development Coordinator John Simmons, authors Becky Imhauser and Bill Claycomb and artist Garnetta Sullivan.
The photos represent most of the mayors for which photos or illustrations were available, from the city’s first mayor in 1864, Gen. George Rapeen Smith, to current Mayor Elaine Horn. Sedalia was founded in 1860.
Mayor Jane Gray was the only other living mayor to attend the ceremony. Photos by Randy Kirby, Sedalia News Journal.
