Gale Wesley Meade, 88, of Cole Camp, formerly of Highland, Ind., died Saturday, July 7, 2012, at Good Samaritan Care Center, Cole Camp. He was born on April 30, 1924, at Wilson, Wisconsin, a son of Wesley and Leona (Estlack) Medes.
After the passing of his father at three weeks of age, he was raised by his mother and step-father, Leona and Bert Rice on a dairy farm and attended school in Wilson, WI. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy and served his country honorably during World War II. On April 27, 1943, in St. Cyril’s Catholic Church in Chicago, Ill., he was united in marriage to Peggy Irene Howard, who preceded him in death on March 21, 2008.
After his discharge from the military, he worked on a dairy farm near Wilson, WI, then moved to Chicago in 1946. In 1949, he moved to Highland, where he installed carpet for Quality Carpets of Lansing, Ill., and Bean Carpet Service of Chicago, Ill., retiring on May 1, 1986. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Highland, Ind. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 180 and VFW Post No. 1109 of Highland, Ind. In 2008, he moved to the Good Samaritan Care Center in Cole Camp. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by: one daughter, Cathy (Luigi) Boria of Hammond, Ind.; four sons, Gale Meade of Chicago, Ill., Terry Meade of Chicago, Ill., Rich (Tina) Meade of Cole Camp, and Robert Meade of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Gloria Frank of Santee, Calif., and Bonnie (Rodney) Rognholt of Cottonwood, Ariz.; one brother, Bill (Carol) Rice of Ham Lake, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Eric Boria, Damon (Kim) Boria, Sara (Brian) McLemore, Daniel (Monica) Meade, Shawn Meade, Carrie Ann (Jed) Williamson, Cassandra Meade, Allison Meade, and Amber Meade; and five great-grandchildren, Kendall McLemore, Gwendolyn Boria, Brandon Meade, Michael Williamson and Christopher Williamson.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wesley Medes; his mother, Leona Medes Rice; his step-father, Bert Rice; one daughter, Diane Mary Meade; one sister, Pat Anderson; and two brothers, Gene Rice and Dick Rice.
The rosary will begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Cole Camp, with visitation to follow.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 13, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Highland, Indiana, with military rites. Burial will be in Chapel Lawn, Highland, Indiana.
The rosary will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 12 at Kuiper Funeral Home, Highland, Ind., with visitation to follow from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Pallbearers will be George Georgeoff, Marty Tharp, Daniel Meade, Brian McLemore, Eric Boria, Damon Boria and Shawn Meade.
The family suggests memorial contributions be given to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in care of the Fox Funeral Home, Cole Camp, Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in care of Kuiper Funeral Home in Highland, Ind., or the American Heart Association.
