Shooting suspect shoots himself

On April 17 at 9:02 p.m., the Sedalia Police Department received numerous calls about shots being fired in the 1600 block of South Carr in Sedalia.

The suspect who was identified as Harry James Young, 39 years old, drove past his estranged wife who was sitting in her vehicle in front of 1611 S. Carr with a male subject and two small children. The wife/victim has been identified as Kellie M. Young, 24 years old.

Harry Young turned his vehicle around and drove back to the victim’s location. Young reportedly got out of his vehicle and fired into the victim’s vehicle striking her in the arm and torso. According to witnesses, the suspect also attempted to shoot the male subject sitting in the passenger seat. The male subject was able to flee on foot and was uninjured. Neither child in the vehicle was injured.

As the suspect fled the scene in his vehicle, he was located by a Sedalia Police Officer. The officer conducted a high risk traffic stop on the suspect. As the officer was giving the suspect verbal commands, the suspect shot himself in the head.

Both victim and suspect were transported via helicopter to the University Hospital in Columbia, Mo.
