Sedalia area native Allen Young, owner and operator of Young’s Ag Vet Service has been involved with agriculture for as long as he can remember.
Young was born in Sedalia and attended Smithton High School growing up, where he graduated in 1980. While attending Smithton, Young played both basketball and baseball.
Young has been married to his wife Linda for 24 years and together they have two children, a daughter named Lindsey and a son named Garrett.
Upon graduating high school Young worked at Young’s Ag Vet Service for his father, before pursuing other agriculture-related jobs.
“I went to work for my Dad’s business, Young’s Ag Vet Service, until 1985. I went to work for Agri-Sales from 1986 to 1991 or 1992. From there I went to work for Walnut Grove Farms in Iowa.
“From there I went to for Pioneer Seeds and then back to Young’s Ag Vet Service,” Young said.
After his father closed the business, Allen decided to open his own Young’s Ag Vet Service.
“Same name, different company,” Young said.
When asked how many employees he currently has, he admitted that it is only himself and Alvie Sutton, a part-time employee who works for Young’s new and used tire operation.
“It is just me and Alvie. He takes care of the tire side of business,” he said.
Young added, “I started a new and used tire repair shop about 60 days ago. It has been going good. It is picking up daily.
With a name like Young’s Ag Vet Service, you would expect him to sell only agriculture and veterinarian supplies, but that is not the case.
“We are thinking about renaming the whole thing to Young’s Supply. We do a lot of barbeque supplies and accessories, and also grills.
“We carry about 75-80 different barbeque sauces and 60 different rubs. We carry all kinds of sauce making ingredients and kits.
“I am currently selling Hogemeyer Seeds and we also carry over 35 different kinds of pet foods, and we carry all pet and livestock vaccines,” Young explained.
He added, “On the tire side we can get new tires for any make or model of car and any kind of brand.”
When Young finds the time he tries to ride his motorcycle any chance that he can get.
Young owns and rides a 2001 Screaming Eagle Road Glide.
“I ride as much as I can, but most of my time is spent right here,” Allen said.
Young also enjoys several other activities when he can find a chance to do them.
“I like ATVs, Jeep off-roading, sports, Missouri basketball, and I barbeque a lot. I do a lot of grilling and smoking,” Young said.
