Luerena Mathewson See, 89, of Sedalia, died Sunday, May 22, 2011, at Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center. She was born March 3, 1922, in Fristoe, a daughter of James L. and Eula Cantwell Mathewson. In 1944, she married Vernon W. See, who preceded her in death in 1999.
Mrs. See owned and operated See’s Jewelry in Fayette. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the PEO sisterhood. She enjoyed playing bridge and traveling. She was a strong advocate for education and had taught in rural schools before marriage.
Surviving are a brother, James L. Mathewson, of Sedalia; two sisters, Evelyn Williams, of Warsaw, and Charlene Hesse, of Lincoln; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Dr. Arvel, Clyde, and Robert in infancy; and a sister, Geraldine Durham.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Heckart Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Drew Hill officiating.
Casket bearers will be Bruce Owen, Gary Williams, Steve Hicks, James Angel, David Mathewson and Chris Mathewson.
Honorary bearers will be Rosalee Edwards, Wanda Taylor, Betty Carter, Carlene Robertson, Doris Mathewson, Betty Jo Clark and Carolyn Stephens.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Warsaw.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until service time Thursday at Heckart Funeral Home.
