Larry Eugene Wilbanks, 59, of Hughesville, died Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at his home.
He was born April 27, 1952, in Perry, Iowa, a son of Alvin and Alice (Roark) Wilbanks. On Jan. 17, 1990, in Sedalia, he married Elana Lemons Newton, who survives of the home.
He was a 1971 graduate of Van Meter High School in Van Meter, Iowa. At the age of 21, he began working as a truck driver. He then worked 26 years at MoDOT, retiring Sept. 1, 2010. Larry grew up on a farm, and loved every aspect of farming. If he wasn’t working at MoDOT, he would be found working on the farm. He also enjoyed tractor pulls and restoring antique tractors with his family and friends. His most recent hobby was racing mini sprint cars in Sweet Springs with son, Seth.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his parents, of Mountain View; a son, Seth Wilbanks (Brittany), of La Monte; three daughters, Suzanna Wilbanks and Julie Reno, both of Sedalia, and Jennifer Brown (Mark), of Whiteman AFB; two step-children, Brett Newton, of La Monte, and Heather Newton, of Brooklyn, NY; one brother, Chet Wilbanks, of Rogers, Ark.; two sisters, Carol Putney, of New Virginia, Iowa, and Joyce Arbaugh, of New Bloomfield; and eight grandchildren.
A Celebration of Larry’s Life was held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Tony Chapman officiating. Burial was in High Point Cemetery near Hughesville. Pallbearers were Travis Teeter, Ryan Watterson, Scott Townsend, Dale Comfort, Philip Schouten and Terry Saylor.
