Virgie Maxine Abney, 96, of Sedalia, died Sunday, May 8, 2011, at Wilshire at Lakewood in Lee’s Summit.
She was born Aug. 26, 1914, in Pettis County, a daughter of Wilbur Wallace and Lennie Maltsbarger Montgomery. On Aug. 28, 1935, in Sedalia, she was married to Vern Leslie Abney, who preceded her in death on Aug. 27, 2009.
Mrs. Abney was a member of East Sedalia Baptist Church, where she was formerly the Women’s Missionary Union president and taught Sunday school. She joined East Sedalia Baptist Church in 1935 and was the oldest lady member.
Survivors include four sons, Robert Vern “Bob” Abney, and his wife, Shirley, of Sedalia, Larry Lee Abney, and his wife, Jean, of Wentzville, Gerald Leslie Abney, of Sedalia, and Richard Earl Abney, and his wife, Janice, of Hughesville; two daughters, Shirley Maxine Sanders, and her husband, Cecil, of Independence, and Barbara Ann Chrisman, and her husband, Riley, of Spearfish, S.D.; eight grandsons; two granddaughters; four step-grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a brother, Donald Montgomery, of Lee’s Summit.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Theo Durrill and Mardell Montgomery; two brothers, Stanley and Leonard Montgomery; and two daughters in infancy, Donna Jean and Carol.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Heckart Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Drew Hill officiating.
Casket bearers will be Brian Abney, Brett Abney, Tim Abney, Dan Abney, Mark Abney and James Abney.
Honorary bearers will be Scott Abney, Darrell Paschall and Joe Chrisman.
Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home.
