She was born Oct. 3, 1929, in Pettis County, a daughter of Elmer and Gladys Bryant Bullard. On May 27, 1949, in Sedalia, she was married to Calvin Otto Otten, who preceded her in death on April 4, 2009.
Laverne and Calvin owned and operated Otten Small Engine. They started the business in their garage in Otterville in 1972, moving the business to Sedalia in 1978. She continued to be very active in the family business until her death. She was a member of Mt. Herman Baptist Church. She enjoyed following sports, playing cards, and had started a card playing group. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her life, and she was very close to her sisters and brothers. After college, she taught school for a year in a country school near La Monte.
Surviving are a daughter, Yvonne Marcum, and her husband, George “Butch,” of Blue Springs; two sons, Ron Otten, and his wife, Sandy, and Mark Otten, and his wife, Gay, all of Otterville; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; five sisters, Eunice Goss, of Sedalia, Viola Yonce, of Sedalia, Shirley Marcum, of Otterville, Hannah Faye Patrick, of Sedalia, and Jackie Lutjen, of Sedalia; and a brother, Wayne Bullard, of Warrenton.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Henderson; and a brother, Elmer Bullard.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Heckart Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Sisney officiating.
Casket bearers will be Jim Brown, Chuck Campbell, Jeff Myler, Raymond Sleeper, Chris Goss and Kerry Schroeder.
Burial will be in Highland Sacred Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Heckart Funeral Home.
