Spelling Bee raises $2,500 for nursery

Melita Day’s 2011 Corporate Spelling Bee, held March 10 at State Fair Community College’s Thompson Center, drew 10 teams.

Over $2,500 was raised with all proceeds from the event going to the child development center which has served the children of Sedalia for 100 years with affordable daycare.

Placing first in spelling were “Preferred Spellers” sponsored by Preferred Properties. Team members were Shirley Alexander, Judee Mabry, and Pete Sublett.

Second place went to “Wanna Bees” sponsored by Inter-State Studio. Team members were Linda Ellis, Barbi Vincent, and Roger Kimball.

Third place went to “Proud to Bee Tigers” sponsored by Anne Gardner. Team members were Dr. Kristee Lorenz, Andrea Eppenauer, and Mona McCormack.

The prize for best costume went to “Bee-Witched” sponsored by Golden Oldies. This team was made up of SFCC nursing faculty members Erin Wilson, Rhonda Jetmore, and Jenie Bruce.

The event was emceed by KSDL radio personality Mike Jenkins. Judges included Delores Heimsoth, Mary Lee Guthrie and Nedra Zimmerschied.
